Heritage Week Event 2025 The Roots & Foundation of Kilbarron Castle

Our group have successfully completed the conservation work on Kilbarron Church. There is still a need for new signage which we hope to complete in 2026. However, now  the focus of the Kilbarron Castle & Church Conservation Group moves in 2025 to the forthcoming work on a section the Curtain wall of the castle.  We have been fortunate in getting a grant offer from the Heritage Council and we hope to begin work soon.

To promote the project we had a Heritage Week event in the Mícheál Ó Cleirigh Primary School on Sunday 17th August starting at 2.30pm.

The event comprised of three talks and demonstrations with light refreshments served afterwards.

Listening to Frank McHugh’s presentation on family history.

Frank McHugh gave a talk and tips on family history of genealogy. This talk  explained how best to access information on the internet

Ursula Schloer gave a talk and demonstration on which herbs and plant found growing in the wild are edible  and what you can make using these plants.

Fergus Cleary gave a short talk and PowerPoint presentation on the history of Kilbarron Castle- its ancient origins and future plans for its conservation. Later there was a guided walk to the castle ruins where  we were able to see the extent of the ruins and  erect the Heritage Council signage onto the outer surrounding fence of the castle.
